Comments from The Neighbourhood Centre
“Kerry is a valuable part of our team. We are so fortunate to have a team of wonderful volunteers like Kerry. Her background in administration and education (30 years) has provided her with skills and knowledge which are put to good use here. Kerry assists us in several roles here including Reception, statistics, tech tutoring (1:1 and group), administration. She is a real people-person and gets along well with everyone. Kerry is well organized and thorough. An example of this is her preparation for our group computer tuition – she researches material, develops a calendar, records information. Kerry is generous in sharing her time with our Centre.”
Key learning for Volunteer Managers
It is important to provide flexibility in days/ hours. Many volunteers have other obligations and responsibilities as well as their volunteer role. Ask about this when they apply for their volunteer role and check in with them on a regular basis. No one wants to ‘lose’ a great volunteer when their volunteer is not available for set times. Also find out what volunteers enjoy doing and what their skills are – some volunteers want to continue doing things they have done previously, and some want to do something different.
